What Is CDN(Content Delivery Network)?

content delivery network or content distribution network (CDN) is a geographically distributed network of proxy servers and their data centres. The goal is to distribute service spatially relative to end-users to provide high availability and high performance. by Wikipedia

Let me explain it more so you can understand more easily.

A Content Delivery Network (or Content Distribution Network) is a system of strategically positioned servers around the globe. The main goals of a CDN are about speed, scalability and high-availability.

What Is CDN?

(An Infographic by KeyCDN)

Usually, when a user visits your website, they first come across your web host’s server(like Bluehost, HostGator).

But If your website has high volume traffic then your website can overload which can make your website load slow or maybe can lead server crash.

So, CDN can help you to save your website from loading slow or crashing, When you use a CDN, your content cached and stored on all its servers.

Now when a user visits your site (original server), the CDN technology redirects them to the closest server to their location.

A CDN service has its servers in the different locations to deliver your content fast to nearby users who are visiting your website. Let’s read below example to understand this.

For exampleThree users are trying to access your site from the different location like first from the United States, second from the United Kingdom and third is India then they can access your website with the closest server.

Below Image will help you to understand this more easily:

CDN benefits

Now You understood that what is CDN and why you need to use it on your WordPress website.

Benefits of CDN

After reading about CDN above, you came to know How much important is to use CDN on your WordPress website.

Website Speed

If you read above’s example then you know how it can make your website load faster. I’ve seen this difference personally after I start using CDN on my WordPress blog.

Imagine, You have to purchase milk because you want to make tea with it, there are two shops where you can purchase milk in your area, one is 60 meter and the second is 1 km far from your home. So which will consume minimum time? of course first, this same happen with CDN service.

It helps users to access your website from their nearest server so obviously, It will load fast.

High Rank in SERP

According to Google, the website which loads fast always get high rank on the Search engine result page. It simple and don’t need any other clearance, if your website load fast then it will be rank high.

Eliminate Crashes and Downtime

If your website is getting high traffic then maybe it causes your loading speed because your server can not handle high load. It will crash and your users will get errors like”Internal Server Error” and “Database Error” which is not good.

CDN will divide your traffic to the different servers instead of 100% load on your main server, so if your use CDN then you don’t need to worry about this and your users will never get that type of ugly errors.

Improve User Experience

No one wants to wait till the page load totally, he will leave and never come back to your site. If your visitors are waiting to open your website so you are losing your visitors.

If you use CDN then it will give a good user experience to your users and they will come back to your site for more content. In short, they will be your regular visitor from one time visitors.

The reason why everyone is not using CDN on their website is, they think it costs too high and they can not afford it. But they are wrong, they can use it free as well as premium.

I am using Cloudflare on my WordPress blog and it is free and paid as well. You can use it free if you want really.

I will be sharing a post on How to Setup CDN for your WordPress website very soon. You can signup for Cloudflare free plan by clicking this link.

In the end, I just want to say that you should start using CDN from right now to take all its benefits. Because if you are forgetting this then you are missing many important this which I mentioned above.

Don’t wait, go and start using a CDN service provider and connect your the website with.
